The Prime Minister’s Press Chief, Bertalan Havasi, has informed the government website kormany.hu that Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Israel David Lau met in Budapest’s Parliament Building on Thursday. Their topics for discussion included the protection and support of Hungary’s Jewish community and the renaissance of Jewish life in Hungary.
The meeting was also attended by Zsolt Semjén, Deputy Prime Minister and President of the Christian Democratic People's Party (KDNP), and Slomó Köves, Executive Rabbi of the Unified Jewish Congregation of Hungary (EMIH). Mr. Orbán assured his guest that “Hungary’s Jewish community is under the unconditional protection of the Government”, adding that “As with the other historic churches, Jewish congregations in Hungary also receive the full amount of available funding”.
The Chief Rabbi expressed his pleasure at the fact that Jewish life in Hungary is flourishing, and thanked Prime Minister Orbán for the assistance provided in this respect, Mr. Havasi said.
