On Wednesday morning Prime Minister Viktor Orbán received President of the International Canoe Federation José Perurena, Secretary-General Simon Toulson, and President of the Hungarian Canoe Federation Etele Baráth.
Participants at the meeting agreed that Duisburg and Szeged are the two “cathedrals” of the kayak-canoe discipline.
The parties also concluded an agreement to ensure high-quality conditions for the 2019 World Championship, which will be held in Szeged; the Government of Hungary will renovate and expand the city’s sports facilities.
Budapest’s bid for the Olympics – in line with the 2020 reform of the Hungarian Olympic Committee – specifies Szeged as the location for kayak-canoe tournaments, thus developments implemented for the 2019 World Championship will also aid Hungary’s bid for the 2024 Summer Olympics.
The meeting held in the Prime Minister’s Office was also attended by Honorary President of the Hungarian Olympic Committee Pál Schmitt and Government Commissioner for Priority Investments in Budapest in charge of Hungary’s bid for the Olympics Balázs Fürjes.
