In Washington on Monday, after his working meeting in the White House with US President Donald Trump, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said that the meeting had strengthened the two countries’ alliance in a number of areas.
Talking to public service media, the Prime Minister noted that the last time he had attended a meeting in a US president’s office had been eighteen years ago. “I sensed the difference […] now there is a different kind of leadership, and more ambitious policy is being pursued today,” he said.
Mr. Orbán underlined that the meeting was important for Hungary because it strengthened the two countries’ alliance in the fields of economic, foreign and security policy, as well as on the issues of migration and aid to persecuted Christians.
The meeting lasted around forty minutes, which was much longer than had been planned. At the meeting Mr. Trump and Mr. Orbán were joined by Hungary’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó and US National Security Advisor John Bolton. This was followed by a plenary meeting between the US and Hungarian delegations.
At the meeting Mr. Trump said that Mr. Orbán is doing good work in preserving Hungary’s security. He praised Hungary as a member of NATO, and also the Hungarian government’s actions to combat illegal immigration.
