Zoltán Kovács, the Government’s international spokesperson, joined Richard Quest on CNN’s business report Quest Means Business to explain the idea behind the amendment of the telecommunications tax by shedding light on what it will really mean from the perspective of service providers and citizens.
Mr. Kovács pointed out that the bill in question is by no means a new type of levy, but the extension of the telecommunications tax previously introduced by the Government.
He emphasised that caps will be introduced, adding that the proposal aims to ensure that the burdens of running a sustainable Hungarian state are fairly distributed among all sectors of the economy, without imposing extra costs on citizens.
The total revenue the Government might gain as a result of involving service providers in the extension of the tax, however, would not exceed HUF 20 billion (EUR 64 million).
In addition, Mr. Kovács underlined that the Government is planning to invest several hundred billions of forints to guarantee that each and every Hungarian household will have broadband internet access by the end of this term.
