“Hungary is calling for Montenegro to be able to open the last chapter of its accession negotiations at the earliest opportunity, in the interests of which we were one of the first to assure the related European Commission report of our support”, Minister of State for the Development and Coordination of EU Policy Szabolcs Takács said after receiving Montenegro’s Chief EU Negotiator Aleksandar Drljević.

At the meeting, the parties discussed the current status of Montenegro’s European Union accession process, the integration prospects of the Western Balkan states, and domestic policy issues that determine the region’s stability. Mr. Takács stressed that it is in the strategic interests of Hungary and the European Union for the countries of the Western Balkans to become members of the European Union as soon as possible, and their successful integration is the most important guarantee of their stability and prosperity. The Minister of State confirmed that Hungary is now supporting Montenegro’s integration preparation by posting a second EU expert.

Aleksandar Drljević thanked Hungary for the consistent support that it has provided thus far towards Montenegro’s Euro-Atlantic integration, and asked that this support continue in future.
