György Bakondi, Chief Security Advisor to the Prime Minister, told public broadcaster Kossuth Rádió that the activation of migration routes is a reality of our times.
Mr. Bakondi said that this activation can be partly observed on the “classic” route that leads through Hungary, but it is more characteristic for the route leading from Libya to the shores of Italy, which is mainly used by migrants from Africa.
He explained that there are a number of uncertain factors in the potential future of migration. As an example he pointed out that there are some three million migrants in Turkey, which in the event of a failure of the EU-Turkey agreement could pose a significant blackmail threat.
Mr. Bakondi also spoke about the amendment of asylum laws which was approved by Parliament on Monday. He said that this was necessary because over the past weeks migration pressure has increased on the Hungarian-Serbian border, where more than one hundred people have been crossing illegally every day. He added that the number of those deterred from attempting to cross the border illegally by the presence of border protection officers is several times higher than this.
He said that the amendment can contribute to preventing masses of people of unknown identity and intentions staying in Hungary.
