According to the Prime Minister’s chief advisor for internal security, refugees stationed in open camps have the right to leave even before the conclusion of their asylum proceedings.

György Bakondi said on the evening programme of the public service television news channel M1 that this was not possible in closed camps, and the rules have been changed in response to pressure from the EU. He added: there are closed camps in Hungary also at present, however, the residents of these facilities are individuals who have committed criminal acts.

He reiterated that Parliament is currently debating the proposal based on which migrants apprehended within 8 kilometres of the border can be taken to the border, and their asylum applications will be assessed in accelerated procedures.

Mr Bakondi further said that some asylum-seekers who were directed to Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Romania have left those countries. In his view, this, too, testifies to the facts that they want to reach the richest European countries and that the resettlement quotas do not work.
