A 20-ear-old Pakistani man armed with a knife attacked a 19-year-old girl in Budapest, M1 Hungarian television reported on Saturday.
Speaking on the channel’s Saturday evening current affairs program, the Prime Minister’s Chief Advisor on Homeland Security Mr. György Bakondi said the incident occurred on Friday; the man stole the girl’s phone and money and the incident was caught on camera, thanks to which the police were quickly able to apprehend the perpetrator.
The Pakistani citizen had previously been caught illegally crossing the border, after which he submitted a request for asylum, which was rejected; he appealed the decision and six months later was accommodated in the open refugee camp in Bicske, from where he travelled to Budapest.
According to Mr. Bakondi, police suspect the man was trying to acquire enough money to travel on illegally to Western Europe, and the incident is also an indicator of the fact that migrants’ “activities in public spaces” are often in conflict with the law throughout Europe.
