According to György Bakondi, Chief Security Advisor to the Prime Minister, Austrian border control measures indicate that Austria no longer intends to accept mass migration.

On Friday Burgenland police announced that from 8 a.m. on Monday Austrian police will be operating random checks on a temporary basis along the section of border between Burgenland province and Hungary. Controls are expected at checkpoints in Bezirk Neusiedl am See, Bezirk Eisenstadt-Umgebung, Bezirk Mattersburg and Bezirk Oberpullendorf. Burgenland police also said that, depending on the circumstances, similar measures may be introduced on further border sections.

Mr. Bakondi told public television channel M1 that Austria has not yet explained the specific reason for this measure. He highlighted, however, that recent information indicates that more migrants are expected to arrive in Europe, and that they will continuously search for new routes.

Based on the information received from the Austrian authorities, the planned system will be similar to that implemented earlier on the Austrian-Slovenian border. Similar measures are also expected to be introduced along the Austrian-Italian border at the Brenner Pass.
