On Saturday, Chief Security Advisory to the Prime Minister György Bakondi said on public television channel M1 that the migration pressure does not ease in spite of bad weather conditions: 2500-3000 migrants arrive in the European Union daily, and once winter is over, a movement of so far unprecedented magnitude might start.

The Chief Security Advisor added that the solutions the EU has come up with so far – such as the quotas, the hotspots or the development of the cooperation with Turkey – have not yielded results: a firmer solution is needed in order to ensure the safety of Europe’s citizens.

Mr. Bakondi said that he fully supports Slovenia’s initiative to immediately control and stop the flow of migrants through the Western Balkan route and to introduce strict border controls at Greece’s borders with Serbia and Macedonia.

He also explained that the aim of the proposed amendment to the Fundamental Law providing for the establishment of a new qualified period for the threat of terrorism is to establish security by ensuring the Hungarian Government’s right and capacity to act, similarly to all Western European countries. Introducing this qualified period – to be declared by Parliament and the President of Hungary – establishes a clear legal situation, Mr. Bakondi said.

He added that the Government is open to all reasonable proposals by the opposition that aim at ensuring security. The draft legislation is a common measure availed of in a number of democracies, Mr. Bakondi said, adding that opposing statements are unfounded.
