On Saturday evening György Bakondi, Chief Security Advisor to the Prime Minister, told Hungarian television channel M1 that it is still unknown who is behind the government computer cyber-attacks, which seem to have been highly organised.

He added, however, that the government databases have a well-developed information protection system.

On Saturday afternoon the Ministry of Interior told Hungarian news agency MTI that over the previous 24 hours thousands of attacks from foreign servers had targeted the government network in a number of waves, but the attacks had been successfully warded off.

According to the Ministry, 62,000 attacks were carried out within a single day through the government website and the academic network, by exploiting public access points in the government computer network. As a result of the cyber-attacks, the government website and that of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences were inaccessible.

Mr Bakondi also said that the attack targeting the Hungarian government network, which overloaded the system, was still in place.
