György Bakondi, Chief Security Advisor to the Prime Minister, told Hungarian television channel M1 in its morning programme that the number of illegal border crossing attempts on the southern border is continuously falling on a daily basis.

He said that on 5 July – the day that in-depth border protection was introduced – 1,060 attempts were recorded at the border fence, and 300 people were apprehended within eight kilometres of the border and were accompanied back to gates in the fence. The others did not succeed in entering the country illegally.

Mr. Bakondi added that over the past week 1,900 people have attempted to cross the border, 600 of whom got across but were apprehended and accompanied back to the other side of the fence. Police officers and soldiers have prevented 1,300 people from illegally crossing the border.

He told Kossuth Rádió’s “180 Minutes” programme that huge numbers of migrants are continuously arriving in Serbia from Bulgaria and Macedonia. On a number of occasions in recent days, however, more people have been travelling back from the Hungarian border towards Belgrade than have been travelling towards Hungary.
