On Wednesday György Bakondi, Chief Security Advisor to the Prime Minister, told public television channel M1 that in the long term the plan presented that day by the European Commission could have grave political, economic and social consequences. The societal composition of European countries and nations could be transformed, leaving aside the security aspects, Mr. Bakondi stressed.
The European Commission presented its proposal on Wednesday. The new scheme would allow EU Member States to refuse to accept migrants as part of a resettlement quota, but only on payment of a penalty of EUR 250,000 for each migrant refused entry.
Mr. Bakondi said that the EU is planning measures which are contrary to the founding treaties and all other legislation so far. According to the Chief Security Advisor the proposal aims to permanently introduce mandatory resettlement quotas into EU law. Based on this proposal, frontline countries (Greece and Italy) could resettle “thousands, even tens and hundreds of thousands” of migrants to other countries when it is deemed that there are “too many” in their countries.
Mr. Bakondi pointed out that the EU’s threat of “financial sanctions’’ stipulates a very large amount per person, and the total sum is unforeseeable, because the number of migrants is also unquantifiable. In this regard the Chief Security Advisor noted that “according to modest estimates”, 1.5 million migrants arrived in Europe last year, while other estimates refer to some 2 million people.
Mr. Bakondi stressed that a number of other countries have already raised their voices against the proposal, which the Commission has presented as a “solidarity contribution”. These are concrete EU plans which “must be blocked”, and in this respect the referendum initiated by the Government is of crucial importance, he added.
