Minister of Justice László Trócsányi held talks with his Icelandic counterpart in Reykjavik on 13 November 2017.
Mr. Trócsányi explained Hungary’s migration policy and standpoint with relation to EU crisis management. Minister of Justice Sigríður Ásthildur Andersen outlined the fact that as part of the Schengen system Iceland is also affected by EU migration policy, and explained that the county is planning to introduce a stricter immigration policy in view of the fact that the previously overly lenient regulations had been abused by a large number of applicants.
The parties agreed that the European Union’s quota system for the mandatory distribution of refugees is a tool that is inefficient and incapable of working. The ministers agreed that immigration is a special issue, and that the related decisions must be primarily made within a national framework.
Minister of Justice László Trócsányi gave a lecture on Hungary’s public debates and disputed issues relating to its relationship with the European Union at the University of Iceland’s Institute of Law.
