During the coronavirus pandemic, Hungary’s containment effort has been one of the most successful in Europe because so far in Hungary we have managed to avoid a phase of mass incidences and fatalities in the thousands, the Justice Minister stated when she met with the Ambassadors of the Member States of the European Union on Friday in Budapest.

According to a communication sent by the Ministry of Justice to the Hungarian news agency MTI, at the meeting Justice Minister Judit Varga rendered an account of Hungary’s achievements in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic and of the steps with which to restart life in Hungary in compliance with strict rules.

The politician said with the state of danger declared on 11 March, the government prevented the epidemic from entering a phase of mass infections. Without declaring a state of danger, it would not have been possible to adopt the necessary measures in good time or at all.

She added that “this was possible because the government could count on Hungarian society’s disciplined cooperation and hard work”.

The Justice Minister highlighted that thanks to the effective containment effort which can be considered highly successful by international standards, the government submitted to Parliament the bill on the termination of the state of danger already on 26 May.

She stressed at the same time that a state of disease control preparedness must be maintained so that the government can continue to adopt the necessary and proportionate measures in good time in the interest of preventing, containing and eliminating any circumstances that might cause a health crisis.

“In times of hardship, the Hungarian people always stand together, and help one another in unity, as one nation; this in turn gives us all strength even during the most difficult times,” Ms. Varga said.
