Both the national security services and the agencies authorised by law to engage in similar activities in Hungary perform their duties flawlessly, in full compliance with the Hungarian laws and regulations.

There is no secret service activity which they would perform in avoidance of the relevant regulations. One should be aware in general that international experienc shows that foreign secret service operations usually contact those to engage in espionage or to disclose information to foreigners intentionally or through negligence who have the best intelligence base. From among those engaged in scientific and other academic activities, it is primarily researchers, journalists, politicians and the leaders of social organisations that fall into this category. Also in Hungary, there are efforts to uncover, to prevent and to eliminate attempts of this kind which fall within the duties of the secret services. The Hungarian secret service agencies perform their duties in this spirit, and protect our country against undesirable intelligence gathering and influencing attempts carried out by means of secret service and other social tools. It clearly testifies to the adequacy of the efforts of our services and the efficiency of their counter-intelligence activities that there are, also at present, several criminal procedures in progress due to espionage.

The national security services are overseen by Parliament’s National Security Committee. The Ministry of Interior continues to provide its full support for the Committee so that it may exercise its powers as a parliamentary overseeing body.
