The UN Working Group on discrimination against women has in certain instances given a distorted presentation of the Hungarian government’s measures to support women.
UN officials have said that the organisation finds it unacceptable that while the Hungarian government supports family values in various ways, at the same time it is artificially creating a polarity between support for women and support for families. They also say that the Government only idealises women as housewives and mothers. In reality, in recent years the Government has implemented measures such as expanding women’s employment and granting special childcare allowances to promote women’s work, day care for working women’s children or the Women40 initiative.
The State Secretariat for Family and Youth Affairs finds it regrettable that supposedly independent international organisations would draft reports about Hungary which lack objectivity, despite the cooperation and constructive approach received from the Hungarian government.
The Hungarian government remains committed to supporting women, including helping them find a proper balance between work and family.
