Minister of Human Capacities Zoltán Balog unveiled on Monday in Shanghai a plaque commemorating Pál Komor, a Hungarian Jew who lived in Shanghai between 1898-1948, who during World War II, helped an estimated 16,000 Jewish refugees – mainly from Germany and Austria – relocate to the United States, Canada or Australia.
The plaque adorns the Shanghai Jewish Museum.
Following the ceremony, Minister Balog announced that commemorating 65 years of Hungarian-Chinese diplomatic relations, Hungary will offer scholarships to 65 Chinese students.
Cecília Szilas, Hungarian ambassador to China said the scholarship will be named after Hungarian architect László Hudec, who designed 65 buildings in Shanghai.
The scholarships – available to students of three universities in Shanghai – will allow Chinese students to study architecture, urban planning and visual culture in Hungary. The first batch of Chinese students may begin their Hungarian studies next February.
