At its last session, the Hungarian Government decided to completely do away with health hazards related to asbestos: waste disposal must start immediately.

The costs of both the waste disposal and the tackling of health hazards will be covered by the Government.

According to the decision, responsibilities must be established and people in the affected region should receive appropriate help. The local population noticed an increase in asbestos-related illnesses after the closure of a cement factory in the region in 2004.
