On Tuesday, Deputy State Secretary for EU and International Affairs at the Ministry of Human Capacities Gergely Prőhle received the delegation of the Damascus University, Syria.

On the agenda of the meeting were scholarships offered by Hungary to Syrian students. During their stay, the Syrian delegation will visit several higher education institutions and will look into possibilities of inter-institutional cooperation.

Mr. Prőhle said that Hungarian-Syrian higher education ties have a long history, and he explained that it is in the interest of Hungary to contribute to the education of talented young Syrians who, upon completion of their studies can contribute to the reconstruction of Syria, reinforce Hungarian-Syrian relations and establish the scientific potential needed to develop and modernise Syria.

The Syrian delegation expressed their appreciation for Hungary’s support. They said that Syrian students are greatly interested in Hungarian scholarships and they praised the good reputation of Hungarian universities in Syria. The delegation particularly appreciated the fact that the scholarship programme was tailored to the specific needs of Syrian students. They emphasised that this will also facilitate the selection of students.
