In reaction to statements by the Romania head of government, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said it was a disgrace to Europe that a Prime Minister with criminal proceedings underway against him “is continuously defaming a neighbouring country in a deceitful manner”.

On Monday, the Romanian Prime Minister said he maintained his standpoint with regard to Hungary and once again criticized the planned construction of a security fence along the Hungarian-Romanian border. Amongst others, Victor Ponta said: Hungary’s behaviour with regard to the refugee issue is anti-Europe and a disgrace to Europe.

In a statement issued to Hungarian news agency MTI on Monday, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó declared: “Hungary is acting in accordance with European regulations with relation to handling immigration”. According to the Minister, Hungary’s difficult situation is caused precisely by the fact that two other EU member states are “purposefully and demonstratively” contravening EU regulations: Greece “is incapable of protecting its borders” and Croatia “is bringing refugees into Hungary by the thousands without registering them”, the statement reads.
