According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, we are getting increasingly closer to a situation in which the southern Schengen border could be moved to Greece’s northern border.
In a statement on Wednesday, Péter Szijjártó responded to an announcement by Macedonian police according to which Macedonia has closed its common border with Greece to illegal immigrants headed for Western Europe. Hundreds of migrants are now stranded in Greek territory as a result of the move.
This is an inevitable consequence of the fact that Greece continues to refuse to adhere to its Schengen obligations, the Foreign Minister stressed.
Mr. Szijjártó is travelling to Bulgaria on Thursday where he will meet with Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov and this issue will also be on the agenda.
