On Saturday foreign affairs spokesperson Anna Nagy told MTI that from Sunday operations would begin at a temporary consulate in the Croatian city of Split, which over a three-month period will serve Hungarian citizens seeking its assistance.

Ms. Nagy explained that Croatia is one of the most popular tourist destinations for Hungarians; most of these visit four Dalmatian counties, from all of which the consulate in Split is easily accessible.

A similar temporary representation has operated in the Croatian city in recent years, and this has become a very well-established practice. The spokesperson said that experience has shown that there is a great need for the temporary consulate, because in summer there are many incidents in which people need its aid – for example, if someone’s passport has been stolen, there has been an accident or some other unfortunate event has occurred.

She said that the consulate can help with translation and liaise with the local authorities; as in recent years, members of the Hungarian police will also assist in the work.

The telephone number of the temporary consulate in Split is 00 385 99558 5555. It is available 24 hours a day for three months, i.e. until 15 September. Hungarian tourists in other areas of Croatia may turn to the Hungarian embassy in Zagreb for similar assistance.
