Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó met with his Serbian counterpart, Ivica Dacic, on the side-lines of informal meeting of EU Foreign and Defence Ministers in Amsterdam on Friday.
“We discussed the further development of economic cooperation between the two countries, reviewed the status of the immigration crisis and agreed that we would speed up the opening of new border crossing stations, in addition to reviewing the status of renovation works along the Budapest-Belgrade railway line”, Mr. Szijjártó told Hungarian news agency MTI:
In the afternoon, Mr. Szijjártó took part in the informal meeting of EU Foreign and Defence Ministers in the Dutch capital.
Following the meeting, the Minister told the press that the chief topic of discussion had been the composition of Europe’s new security strategy, with reference to which he explained that taking into account the country’s economic and security interests, the Hungarian Government believes primary targets should include the stabilisation of the Western Balkan region and the EU’s eastern neighbourhood.
Hungary is urging for the significant speeding up of the European Union integration process for the Western Balkan countries, because this is the best method of stabilising the region. Accelerating Serbian and Montenegrin EU accession talks and the commencement of negotiations with Montenegro is especially important, he said.
