“What we are seeing in Macedonia is the result of a series of external interventions and clearly indicates the dangers involved if the life of a country is influenced from outside” Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said on Friday with regard to the protests in Skopje and the attack on the country’s Parliament Building.
In a telephone statement to Hungarian news agency MTI, Mr. Szijjártó, who is in Malta attending a meeting of EU foreign ministers, said that Macedonia used to have a stable government that was capable of winning five consecutive elections.
“However, during the past three years there have been a series of major interventions in Macedonia’s internal affairs. The embassies of countries thousands of miles away dictated the date of elections, organisations linked to George Soros financed anti-government drives and minority parties were given orders by a neighbouring country”, Mr. Szijjártó explained, adding that the result of all this is saddening: instability, chaos and violence.
“Macedonia’s example clearly indicates the dangers involved if the life of a country is influenced from outside”, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade stressed.
On Thursday, protestors broke into Macedonia’s Parliament Building in Skopje and around a hundred people were injured in the violence, including Members of Parliament and reporters. The social democratic opposition may have lost to the mid-right governing party at the last elections, but could achieve a majority in coalition with its Albanian allies. On Thursday, this majority elected a new Speaker of Parliament while ignoring the official agenda, after the existing Speaker ordered recess. The right is questioning the legality of the vote and the protestors are angry at the election of the new Speaker; this was why they entered the Parliament Building.
