Hungary welcomes the commencement of the negotiations between the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and the Taliban in Doha. As a member state of NATO, which is an active participant in the establishment of the Afghanistan peace process, we encourage the negotiating parties to take this historic opportunity to resolve their existing differences in a peaceful manner, via negotiations.
We trust that the parties will fulfil their commitments according to international treaties, namely the USA-Taliban Agreement and the USA-Afghanistan Joint Statement, and that during the course of negotiations they will strive to resolve their disputed issues and to develop the conditions for a comprehensive peace agreement in a spirit of constructiveness. A jointly worked out, violence-free future will create an opportunity for human rights to be fully enforced in Afghanistan, for the protection of women, children and minorities to be realised, and for Afghanistan to never again be a hiding place for terrorists.
Hungary remains committed to supporting Afghanistan, the Afghan people, the Afghan security forces, and the peace process. The negotiations in Doha are creating a real opportunity for Afghanistan to become a stable state that lives in peace with itself and with the world.
