On 13 June, Minister of State for Security Policy and International Cooperation Dr. István Mikola attended the ministerial meeting held in Vienna to mark the 20th anniversary of the signing of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT).

In his speech, the Minister of State praised the Hungarian diplomatic efforts that were crucial to the conclusion of the treaty, and Hungary’s commitment to the goals set down in the document. However, he also drew attention to the need for the earliest possible entry into force of the Treaty.

The Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty was opened for signature in 1996 and Hungary ratified the document in 1999. Although more than 180 countries have already signed the agreement, of which 164 have also ratified it, the goal remains the universal affirmation of the Treaty, i.e. a global ban on nuclear weapons testing.

It is in this spirit that Hungary remains committed to reducing the proliferation of nuclear weapons.
