“During his telephone conversation with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, United States President-elect Donald Trump expressed his thanks for Hungary’s support of American Hungarians and also said he had always had great respect for Hungary”, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said at an event in reply to a question from the press.

In reply to a question at a press conference following the signing of the strategic partnership agreement with ThyssenKrupp Presta Hungary Limited, the Foreign Minister told reporters details about Wednesday’s telephone conversation between Viktor Orbán and Donald Trump.

According to Mr. Szijjártó, Mr. Trump began the conversation by thanking Mr. Orbán for supporting the Hungarian community, indicating that it meant a lot to him that Hungarian Americans had stood by him and that this had also had a significant influence on his election victory.

“I’m a big fan of Hungary”, Mr. Szijjártó quoted the President-elect as saying, indicating that he has always had great respect for Hungary.

“Donald Trump also said that he respected the performance of the Hungarian Prime Minister, Hungary and the Hungarian economy, and spoke about the fact that there are exciting times ahead for the world and he is looking forward to working together with the Hungarian Prime Minister and Hungary”, the Foreign Minister added. Mr. Szijjártó confirmed that Donald Trump had invited the Hungarian Prime Minister for a meeting in Washington, the details of which will be organised after the inauguration of the new U.S. President in January.

According to Mr. Szijjártó, it was clear from the telephone conversation that we are talking about two politicians who have an entirely new approach to the world’s challenges. This new kind of approach can be seen in Donald Trump’s campaign speeches and in his economic and foreign policy plans, similarly to the new approach with which Hungary did not simply survive following 2010, but “became part of the solution in both Europe and the world”.

In the Hungarian Foreign Minister’s opinion the telephone conversation confirmed the fact that the decision of voters in the United States is favourable to both Hungary and Europe. “It is good news for Hungary that Donald Trump ultimately won the trust of the American People”, he added.
