The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary and the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs held a Conference today titled ’Victims of armed conflicts at the juncture of international humanitarian law and human rights law’.
With the participation of renowned experts, the Conference gave an insight into the relationship between international humanitarian law (IHL) and human rights law (HRL) from the perspective of compliance, accountability and fact-finding, and how this relationship affects the protection of victims of armed conflicts. The speakers of the event presented recent challenges through the prism of concrete cases and situations, while also giving a thorough analysis of the underlying legal questions.
In his opening speech State Secretary Csaba Balogh emphasized the need for addressing the current challenges of international humanitarian law. He reinforced Hungary’s dedication to the promotion of IHL and to maintaining a close relationship with organizations working in the field of humanitarian assistance and international humanitarian law. He also mentioned that Hungary had transferred a voluntary contribution of 50.000 euros to the International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism established to assist in the investigation and prosecution of those responsible for the most serious crimes committed in Syria.
