“Instead of continuously criticising certain member states, the Brussels institutions should be dealing with trying to restore the security of Europe and the European people. NATO must assume a greater role in guaranteeing European security because of the failure of Brussels”, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó emphasised in a statement to Hungarian news agency MTI on Monday following a meeting of foreign ministers from NATO’s Central European members states (B9).
“We are approaching the second anniversary of the Paris terrorist attack, and since then 27 terrorist attacks have been committed in Europe, 330 people have lost their lives and 1300 people have been injured. This clearly indicates that the Brussels institutions have been incapable of handling the security risks that go hand-in-hand with migration”, the Minister said.
“Hungary and the countries of the Visegrád Group (V4) alone have been capable of stopping the wave of illegal immigration, in addition to which the migration agreement with Turkey is currently blocking the Western Balkan migration route. Other than this, the European Union is defenceless”, Mr. Szijjártó added.
“NATO must assume a much greater role in guaranteeing European security, and we are calling on NATO to play a much greater role in stopping the wave of migration in the seas that border Europe from the south. Operations in the Mediterranean and Aegean must be reinforced”, the Minister said.
According to the Minister, the European security situation cannot be handled without NATO assuming a greater role.
