“Precision farming is required for the renewal of Hungary’s agriculture. Agricultural digitalisation promotes stability and predictability in food production and increases efficiency, thus improving competitiveness and higher income levels”, Minister of Agriculture István Nagy said at the opening ceremony of the PREGA conference and exhibition.
“The 79th National Agricultural and Food Exhibition and Fair (OMÉK) will be held at the Hungexpo Budapest Fair Center between 26 and 29 September 2019. Organised by the Ministry of Agriculture and the Agricultural Marketing Centre (AMC), the event will receive 1.2 billion forints (EUR 3.8 million) in financing from the central budget”, Minister of Agriculture István Nagy announced in Budapest on Thursday.
Capital expenditures in agriculture continued to increase last year. This is attributable to support schemes within the Rural Development Program, more profitable agricultural production, and favourable credit conditions. All this improves the competitiveness and profitability of the sector, and mitigates the issues caused by the scarcity of labour.

Deputy State Secretary for International Relations Zsolt Belánszky-Demkó from the Ministry of Agriculture has proposed the establishment of a network of agricultural advisors and model farms in Africa with Hungary’s involvement. Mr. Belánszky-Demkó held talks with Gilbert Fossoun Houngbo, President of the UN’s International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), in Rome.
“The basic objective of Hungary’s upcoming Digital Agricultural Strategy is that farmers should learn and take advantage of new technologies in their daily work. For this reason, education and knowledge transfer will be of paramount importance in the coming years”, State Secretary for Agriculture Zsolt Feldman, said in Kecskemét.
During their usual winter inspections, officials from the National Food Chain Safety Office found rancid walnuts and poppy seeds for human consumption that contained more morphine than allowed by the relevant regulations. Most of the irregularities elicited just a written warning. The nationwide nspections resulted in 3,312 tests, 117 warnings, 14 business activity limitations, and 125 fines amounting to a total of HUF 8,065,154.
