“Despite the relatively low results for this year compared to last year’s historic record, it may still be stated that the country’s grain supply is sufficiently catered for and there are also plenty of goods available for export”, Deputy Minster of Agriculture István Nagy said at the 15th Euro-regional Bread Festival in Győr.
The Ministry of Agriculture’s Parliamentary State Secretary pointed out that the harvesting of winter wheat had been completed everywhere, with a total yield of 5 million tons from a production area of 958 thousand hectares. The highest average yields were reported from Tolna and Baranya counties.
A higher than average quantity of winter wheat was produced this year: the usual ratio of soft and forage wheat is 30:70 percent, but this year the average was around 50:50 percent.
Mr. Nagy pointed out that the ratio of soft what to forage wheat was even higher in Győr-Moson-Sopron County, at 75:25 percent, and indicated that the higher quantity of soft wheat could also lead to an increase in the sector’s export ratio.
The Deputy Minister also spoke about the fact that 1 million tons of winter barley has been successfully stored, with a national average yield of 5 tons/hectare.
The country’s bread-making grain, feed and seed supply is assured, in addition to which there are also plenty of goods available for export, he told reporters, adding that outstanding quality GMO-free Hungarian grain is highly sought-after in Europe.
