“The project financed by the European Union, within the framework of which we are able to welcome Georgia’s Deputy Minister for Environmental Protection and Agriculture and his delegation, helps the exchange the experience with relation multi-purpose forest management that assures the harmonisation of economic, social and nature conservation requirements”, Deputy Minister of Agriculture Sándor Farkas said upon receiving the Georgian experts.

The implementation of the twinning programme entitled “The reinforcement of sustainable forest management in Georgia” was awarded to the Hungarian Ministry of Agriculture, jointly with the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Lithuania. In addition to the on-site examination of conservation-based forest management and Hungarian sustainable forest management practices, the Georgian delegation, which is in Hungary for a study trip, will also be able to examine the supervision of the timber commercial chain, which is aimed at repressing the black and grey economies.

In his welcome speech, Sándor Farkas highlighted Hungary’s FAO scholarship programme, within the framework of which the country has received 300 students from 40 countries for various agricultural training courses over the past ten years. The Deputy Minister indicated his hope that the number of students taking part in the programme will increase significantly in the near future.

Georgia’s Deputy Agriculture Minister Iuri Nozadze voiced his hope that the experience gained during the course of the twinning programme, soon to be concluded, will provide considerable assistance to enable Georgia to respond to the agricultural challenges it faces, and thanked the Hungarian experts for their assistance.
