This year due to the coronavirus epidemic, only the ceremonial raising of the national flag and the presentation of the Hungarian Legion of Honour awards will be held from among the government programmes commemorating the 1956 revolution and freedom fight, the Minister of State for International Communication and Relations told the Hungarian news agency MTI on Wednesday.

According to Zoltán Kovács’s communication, the national flag will be raised with military honours at Kossuth tér in Budapest at 9.00 a.m. next Friday.

On 22 October, Thursday, there will be a light show projected onto the building of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, while between 22 October and 4 November, photos from the time of the revolution and freedom fight entitled “Memories 1956 – Urban Exhibition” will be on display at iconic locations around the capital, he wrote.

The Minister of State is asking state agencies and local governments to regard this as a guideline upon the organisation of programmes and to avoid events with large audiences.
