According to Government Spokesperson Zoltán Kovács, the Sunday referendum will send a clear message to Brussels: If the people don’t want something then policies cannot be built on it, because “it creates more tension than solutions”.
On Hungarian M1 television’s Friday morning current affairs programme, Mr. Kovács stressed: Hungary has not transferred any right concerning migration to Brussels. “They are trying to introduce a mandatory and ‘perpetual’ distribution system with no upper limit, while circumventing the governments of Member States, despite the fact that two community decisions were made last year concerning voluntary distribution”, he added.
“The problem must be kept outside the borders of Europe and help should be taken to where it is really needed”, Mr. Kovács said, noting that a significant majority of migrants are not refugees but have set out in the hope of a better life.
According to the Government Spokesperson: “What we are currently facing at Europe’s borders is dangerous and must be stopped”.
On Kossuth Radio’s “180 Minutes” programme, Mr. Kovács highlighted: “If the eight-element Brussels quota package is adopted it will be the beginning of a system in which Member States cannot say no to central decisions”.
