The Government does not support the candidacy of the People’s Party top candidate Manfred Weber or socialist top candidate Frans Timmermans for the post of European Commission President, because in recent months Manfred Weber has insulted the Hungarians on several occasions, while Frans Timmermans “essentially lied continuously” with relation to Hungary during the EP election campaign, State Secretary for International Communication and Relations Zoltán Kovács said in the recess of Wednesday’s cabinet meeting in Budapest.

“Fidesz-KDNP achieved a record victory with a record participation at the European Parliament (EP) elections, and accordingly Prime Minister Viktor Orbán was able to represent the interests and positions of the Hungarians at Tuesday’s summit of EU heads of state and government in Brussels with a newly confirmed mandate and in a reinforced form”, Mr. Kovács declared.

With relation to this, the State Secretary once again underlined: “The Government cannot support the candidacy of Manfred Weber or Frans Timmermans because in recent months Manfred Weber has insulted the Hungarians on several occasions, while Frans Timmermans has essentially lied continuously with relation to Hungary during the EP election campaign”.

Mr. Kovács cited two statements by Manfred Weber, firstly when in March the top candidate of the European People’s Party declared that “he doesn’t want to become Commission President with the votes of the Hungarians”, and secondly last December when he stated that at the vote on the Sargentini Report he had not voted against Fidesz or Viktor Orbán, but against all of Hungary.

“Accordingly, Manfred Weber has become unfit to enjoy Hungary’s support in any kind of candidacy race”, the  State Secretary for International Communication and Relations declared.

With relation to Frans Timmermans, he said he could list page after page of the lies, for instance with relation to freedom of speech, the rule of law or anti-Semitism, that the top candidate of the Socialists has stated with relation to Hungary, claiming them to be fact.

“The Government is only willing to accept and support a candidate for the post of EC President who conforms to the conditions explained by Viktor Orbán, meaning who respects member states, who does not apply double standards, and who seeks to stop migration and protects Europe’s Christian roots”, Mr. Kovács confirmed.
