“The migration route has changed in recent weeks; the migrants are once again moving towards Hungary”, the Chief Security Advisor to the Prime Minister said on Hungarian M1 current affairs television on Wednesday morning.
György Bakondi said that instead of the usual route (Bosnia-Croatia-Slovenia), migrants are arriving at the Hungarian border or at the Hungarian-Serbian-Romanian triple border via Serbia.
“Interestingly, they are quite good at identifying locations where they can count on the greatest success”, he said, citing as an example Hercegszántó-Hóduna in Bács-Kiskun County, where there is no border security fence because it could not be constructed there.
“The situation is similar at the Röszke border crossing station, where the migrants attempted to break through last week, since they know that there is a 3-4 metre section where there is no fence”, he stated.
Mr. Bakondi added that it follows from this that people smugglers are also active and are continuously testing the border security system, together with the migrants.
“Over 4100 people have already attempted to cross the border illegally so far this year, which represents a significant increase compared to the figures for last year, or indeed the previous years”, he stated.
He also mentioned that migrants are using diverse methods: they attempt to cut through, climb over, or dig under the fence, or to hide in various vehicles to get into the country.
