The government welcomes the latest development that the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee has approved the appointment of Olivér Várhelyi as EU commissioner. The Hungarian opposition’s machinations have failed; they did everything they could to ensure that Hungary should not have an EU commissioner, but they have failed.
Hungary regards the position of commissioner for EU enlargement and neighbourhood policy as key for the strengthening of the EU, enlargement towards the Western Balkans and the protection of the Balkans migration route. We know full well that this is not in the best interests of pro-immigration forces.
We sincerely hope that the new European Commission which will start its operation shortly will bring about a more balanced and more sober EU leadership, and will open a new chapter in the EU’s immigration policy. Together with the Hungarian people, we expect the new leadership to halt migration, and to protect Christian culture and a Europe of nations.
