Minister of State for Government Communication Bence Tuzson told Hungarian television channel M1 that Brussels must acknowledge that three million people have rejected mandatory quotas in Hungary.
Mr. Tuzson called the referendum campaign a success, since it has resulted in the number of people who consider the issue important surpassing the number of those who had earlier decided on EU accession.
He also said that the referendum means that the European Union “can no longer stand on its head”: in other words, there is no further possibility that “Brussels makes a decision in which nation states only have the implementing role”. Instead, he added, the EU “must stand on its feet”, and EU decisions must be made on the basis of nation states’ decisions.
In response to a question about the future, he said that “the struggle will continue, the battle will continue”, and he underlined that the National Assembly and the Government must attend to its duties related to Hungarian law.
